500 dollar fine for violating isolation rule

Saturday, January 30th, the police pulled over a V-car with a tourist who was supposed to be in isolation. They were able to locate the vehicle with the tourist near Citgo Boulevard. The man received a $500- fine for violating the instructions. He was supposed to remain in isolation at an apartment complex covered by the insurance for those infected with Covid-19.

What happened was that this American tourist came to the island to spend some days on holiday. When he arrived, he tested negative, but he had to test before his flight, following the new US regulations when the time came to leave. He tested two days before his flight, and it came back weak-positive.

Consequently, the airline refused to fly him back with the risk of getting denied entrance into the US.  DVG informed him that he had to go to the apartment complex right away. They explained to him the strict rules of isolation he must follow.

The tourist explained that he wasn’t driving around but had to change accommodations. Hence, he made use of the opportunity to stop at a supermarket to buy things for the next 10 days he would have to be on the island, unaware that he had to make use of a concierge service to do his grocery shopping for him.

The truth is that from March 2019 up until now, only about 7 tourists received a fine for not complying with the rules of isolation of quarantine. Locals, for the most part, respected the rules. The group of people who were mostly fined for violating the rules was the Latin community working and living in Aruba.
