The 22nd edition of the International Bolas Criollas Tournament officially kicked off this morning, bringing together teams from Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao to compete for the championship title. This year’s tournament is dedicated to Robert Feliciano in recognition of his lifelong contribution to the sport.
Feliciano has been involved in the world of bolas for more than 40 years and is considered one of the driving forces behind the tournament’s international success. According to Ruthmila Odor-Croes, a member of Papaya Ranch, Feliciano is always ready to step in whenever help is needed. In appreciation of his dedication and efforts, the organizers chose to honor him this year.
The opening ceremony featured the national anthems of the three participating islands, followed by a traditional folkloric dance performance. Local artist Jair “Casper” Dijkhoff added a festive touch with his signature carnival music. The ceremonial first pitch officially marked the start of the tournament, with Feliciano’s grandson throwing the opening ball. Feliciano and his wife then stepped onto the field, and their two grandsons played the first round to kick off the four-day competition.

Following the ceremony, matches began, with most of Aruba’s teams playing first. Teams from Bonaire and Curaçao were also scheduled to compete later in the day. Over the course of the tournament, more than 170 matches will be played at the Papaya Ranch field.
