Aruba Airport Earns LEED Gold Certification for Terminal Expansion

by Nicole

The Aruba Airport Authority N.V. (AAA) is celebrating a major milestone: Queen Beatrix International Airport’s Gateway 2030 Phase 1A Terminal Expansion has earned the prestigious LEED Gold Certification. This makes it the first airport terminal in the Caribbean and the first new building in Aruba to achieve this recognition for green building excellence.

On June 26, AAA hosted a small reception to mark the occasion. Guests included the Minister of Tourism, Transport, and Labor, Mr. Wendrick Cicilia, members of the Board of Supervisory Directors, and Aruba Airport staff who contributed to reaching this goal. The event honored the teamwork and shared vision that drove the project forward, strengthening Aruba Airport’s role as a leader in sustainable aviation in the Caribbean.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a global standard for environmentally responsible buildings. Aruba Airport earned 68 out of a possible 79 points to achieve the Gold level.

About Gateway 2030 Phase 1A
The project added 14,250 square meters to the U.S. Departures Passenger Terminal, including a new check-in hall, baggage hall, and airline offices. Sustainability was at the heart of its design, with highlights such as:

  • 48% less energy demand than the existing terminal, plus 5% renewable energy generated on-site
  • 24% less water use, with no potable water used for irrigation
  • Over 57% of construction waste diverted from landfills
  • Use of recycled and natural materials to support cleaner indoor air
  • Electric vehicle charging stations for 5.35% of total parking spaces
  • Solar panels and green power purchasing
  • Indoor air quality measures like demand-controlled ventilation, LED lighting, and low-VOC materials

Through these measures, AAA is working to ensure that growth at the airport supports both the local economy and the environment.

Looking to the Future
The Gateway 2030 project addresses growing passenger numbers while protecting the environment. The collaboration with Netherlands Airport Consultants helped ensure sustainable design principles were met, and future phases of the project are already in progress, aiming for further LEED certifications.

Angeline Flemming, Director of Health and Sustainability, said:
“This historic achievement was made possible by the dedication of our entire team and shows AAA’s commitment to working responsibly. We take our role in sustainability seriously, especially when maintaining and expanding airport facilities.”

Gilbert Rafael, Chief Development & Technology Officer, added:
“By using LEED principles, we give our team a clear framework to include efficiency and sustainability from the start. This approach guarantees results in lowering our power and water use.”
