Around 12:25 am on Friday morning, a single-vehicle crash took place on Watty Vos Boulevard near the roundabout that connects Cumana and Dakota.
The driver of a blue Suzuki Swift was heading toward Cumana from Wayaca when, according to his statement, he saw a black shadow pass in front of his car. Startled, he swerved and lost control, crashing into the opposite lane. All signs indicate that speeding played a major role in the accident.
As police took his statement, the strong smell of alcohol raised immediate concerns. Officers had difficulty understanding him and quickly noticed signs of intoxication. The driver, a young man, was subjected to a breathalyzer test, which confirmed he was over the legal limit.
Police arrested the driver and transported him to the station, where he will appear before a public prosecutor. His car was left overturned, with all four wheels in the air. The cost of the tow truck to recover the vehicle will be charged to him.
These types of incidents are often complicated further by insurance issues. In many cases, insurers may refuse to cover damages when the driver is found to be intoxicated.
