Chevron tankers stranded near Aruba due to new U.S. sanctions

by Nicole

The U.S. government’s latest sanctions against Venezuelan oil products, announced by President Donald Trump, have created a complicated situation involving tankers transporting Venezuelan crude to American markets.

Although some may find this surprising, the U.S. had already imposed sanctions on Venezuela for some time, banning major oil companies from purchasing Venezuelan crude in an effort to pressure political change in the country.

Over the years, these sanctions were gradually expanded, but companies like Chevron Corporation were still allowed to conduct limited petroleum operations with Venezuela. However, in recent weeks, after Trump’s administration announced even stricter measures against Nicolás Maduro’s government, Chevron suddenly found itself needing to act quickly.

Reports indicate that PDVSA, Venezuela’s state oil company, canceled several crude export contracts. As a result, Chevron and others are now required to return Venezuelan crude oil already stored in their tankers back to PDVSA storage tanks in Punto Fijo.

On April 14th, a Chevron-chartered ship, loaded with 500,000 barrels of Venezuelan oil and prepared for transport to the U.S., was ordered to turn back and pump the oil into a designated Venezuelan terminal.

These developments come after President Trump’s announcement of new sanctions against Venezuela’s oil industry, raising uncertainty over whether PDVSA would receive payment for shipments.
