The Aruban Olympic Committee (COA) recently hosted a productive meeting with the Aruba Basketball Bond (ABB) and Martin Ho Suie Sang, a representative of the Dutch Basketball Federation (NBB). Martin, who serves as the NBB’s program manager for 3×3 basketball, is currently involved in a development project aimed at strengthening this fast-growing discipline across the Dutch Caribbean.
The meeting focused on exploring ways to support the growth of 3×3 basketball in Aruba—a variation of the sport that has gained significant international traction in recent years. Aruba has already taken steps in this direction, having fielded a youth team at the 2022 South American Youth Games in Rosario, Argentina.
Martin presented details about the NBB’s current initiative, which includes visiting each island within the Dutch Kingdom to assess local basketball programs and offer support. In Aruba, he noted clear potential for growth, highlighting the federation’s efforts to enhance its performance and structure. For example, interim ABB president Russel is currently enrolled in FIBA’s “ADELANTE” program, a leadership course designed to strengthen the role of women in basketball.
COA praised the ongoing cooperation between ABB and NBB, calling it a valuable opportunity to elevate the sport locally. The committee reaffirmed its commitment to assisting ABB, particularly in the areas of training, technical development, and management guidance.
By leveraging this international partnership, COA hopes to strengthen Aruba’s basketball scene and provide new pathways for young athletes to develop their talent.
