For the first time, Dutch marines are conducting joint training exercises with their Colombian counterparts on Colombian soil. The three-week military exercise is taking place in Turbo and is aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and sharing operational knowledge and experience.
Throughout the training, the forces will engage in a range of scenarios, including riverine, amphibious, and coastal operations—skills that are essential to the marine corps. By working together in the demanding terrain of Colombia, both units enhance their adaptability and readiness for deployment in diverse conditions.
The exercise also includes participation from the Royal Netherlands Navy support ship HNLMS Pelikaan. In addition to contributing to maritime exercises at sea, the ship provides logistical support and transportation for personnel and equipment.

“This training provides a unique opportunity to learn from one another,” says Major Rik, commander of the Marine Squadron Carib. “We’re combining our expertise, strengthening each other’s capabilities, and fostering mutual trust.”
The Colombian forces have also responded positively to the joint initiative, underscoring the benefits of this close collaboration.
The exercise represents a concrete step forward in the military partnership between the Netherlands and Colombia. It marks a valuable milestone in their cooperation on security, training, and operational readiness—contributing to the shared goal of promoting peace and stability in the Caribbean region.
