A team of firefighters successfully rescued a group of goats that had fallen and become trapped beneath the cliffs in Boca Turtuga. About a week ago, ten goats went missing from their home after trying to escape from some dogs. It was discovered today that the goats had been chased to the cliff’s edge, fallen off, and become stuck in a small cave below.
The goats remained trapped for almost a week, and their owner feared they were dead. Nearby park staff were unable to safely remove them and called the fire department for assistance. Firefighters arrived at 10:00 am, and started crafting their rescue operation.
Two firefighters descended into the cave, where they found eight goats extremely weak and visibly traumatized. They then went on to handle each goat individually, securing and lifting them one by one. The operation was challenging, as the animals were frightened and uncooperative, requiring different techniques to ensure their safety.
After hours of careful work, all eight goats were rescued and returned to their owner. The fate of the remaining two goats is unknown; they may still be lost, taken by the dogs, or swept away by the sea. Several days without food or water and exposure to the harsh conditions beneath the cliffs left the goats weakened and tired. Hopefully with some much-needed rest, food and water, they will all make a full recovery.
Firefighters were praised for their dedication and compassion, showing that their work extends beyond rescuing people to include animals in distress.
