The fishing industry is a cornerstone of Aruba’s economy, and Minister of the Primary Sector Geoffrey Wever emphasized the importance of the newly held “Seafood Festival” in Savaneta. Taking place for the first time in the neighborhood, the festival is seen as an initiative that should continue to support the sector while attracting visitors.
Minister Wever highlighted that many local families have generations of fishermen, and that fishing remains an important community profession. “An event like this honors our fishermen and the Savaneta neighborhood, known for its fishing heritage as Aruba’s first capital. It is something that should continue to be promoted. The Savaneta First Capital of Aruba Foundation took the initiative and invited us to cooperate with this event,” he said.
Events like the Seafood Festival not only bring the community together but also strengthen the primary sector. “This aligns perfectly with the government’s goal of maintaining a strong fishing industry, which is why support is essential,” Minister Wever explained. He added that, as an island nation surrounded by the sea and with a long-standing reliance on seafood, it is crucial to continue providing backing to the sector. “The government is proud to be part of this and fully supports the foundation’s initiative to organize such an event.”
During the festival, an agreement was signed for the construction and renovation of the Savaneta pier, a project recently announced that involves the former Brisas del Mar pier.
The ceremony also included a blessing from the pastor of Savaneta. In addition, the government is working with Santa Rosa to provide every fisherman with a safety package, ensuring that in case of an emergency at sea, help can arrive as quickly as possible. All fishermen have the right to register for this package, which includes an alarm system that activates if they enter the water.
