Illegal dumping turns San Nicolas street into an eyesore

by Nicole

Illegal dumping remains a growing problem across Aruba, with more sites appearing instead of disappearing. One of the latest areas affected is Caya Bonaire in San Nicolas.

This comes despite two recent cleanup efforts through the “Baki Den Bario” program, which provides bins for proper waste disposal. Even with these initiatives, trash continues to pile up in the neighborhood.

Photos from 24ora highlight the extent of the issue: everything from diapers to household items has been discarded there, leaving the area with a strong odor and the appearance of a landfill. Though it is not an official dump site, its condition makes it look like one.

Residents are calling for stronger action from the government, as the problem in San Nicolas shows little sign of improving.

Aruba is a small island where keeping public spaces clean should be a shared responsibility. Both residents and visitors benefit from a clean environment, yet too many people still choose to leave their trash wherever they want. Without greater awareness and accountability, the island risks ongoing damage to its communities and its reputation.
