The closing of Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) in Aruba was marked by an impressive live performance at Scratch Kitchen Aruba on April 30th. The event celebrated the global influence of jazz while also highlighting the growth and talent of local musicians in a semi-formal, professional setting.
The evening began with Caribbean Combo, a student ensemble from the Scol di Musica Rufo Wever. Under the artistic direction of maestro Carlos Bislip, who performed on vibraphone, the group delivered a polished and confident performance that reflected strong musical development.
The ensemble blended Caribbean rhythms with traditional jazz elements, creating a unique and engaging sound. Their rendition of “There Will Never Be Another You,” arranged in a danza style, paid tribute to Aruba’s musical heritage. They also demonstrated versatility by performing the bossa nova piece “Lady Bird” and the energetic mambo instrumental “Day and Night.”
The group included Stephanie Quant on bass, Alakina Gonzalez on guitar, Aaron Rincon on piano, Sebastian Sanchez on percussion, Renzo Dijkhuizen on conga, and Elijah Wester on drums.
The second half of the program focused on vocal performances, accompanied by a skilled trio consisting of Mariano Morales on piano, Serghio Jansen on guitar, and Carlos Bislip on drums.
The vocalists performed a wide range of songs, from classic jazz standards to more modern pieces. Lucre Houtman’s performance of “The Look of Love” and Elisabeth Pope’s rendition of “Lullaby of Birdland” showed strong technical ability and control.
Reanne Ras delivered a lively version of “Cheek to Cheek,” while Soliaca Clarinda performed “One Note Samba,” and Tabitha Smit Heemstad sang “Blessed Assurance.” Osdelly Lacroes brought emotional depth with “Mariposa,” and Soraine Leonard performed pieces such as “Amor Di Mi Bida.” Placido Hazel added a refined touch with “What a Wonderful World.”
A standout moment of the evening was the appearance of special guest Ruth Silva. As a professional vocalist and vocal coach, her influence could be seen in the confidence and technique of the performers. Her closing performances of “Ausencia” and “Misty” highlighted her experience and artistry.
The success of International Jazz Day 2026 shows the value of strong collaboration between Aruba’s cultural organizations and private partners. Organizers expressed appreciation to contributors such as Lotto pa Deporte, SETAR, the Department of Culture Aruba, the Aruba Tourism Authority, and the Scol di Musica Rufo Wever.
The event reinforced that jazz continues to thrive in Aruba, not only as a form of entertainment but also as an important area of musical education and artistic growth.
