Linguist and Papiamento specialist Ramon Todd Dandaré participated in the “Encontro Internacional da Crioulidade Atlântica” conference, held from May 26 through 29 in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde. His participation came through an official invitation from the Presidency of Cape Verde.
The international conference brought together the President of the Republic of Cape Verde, along with prominent figures from the fields of politics, education, culture, and the arts from various island and continental territories around the world.
As part of an expert panel at the University of Cape Verde, Todd Dandaré delivered a presentation representing both Aruba and La Guajira. The conference served as an important academic forum for discussions on language, identity, and cultural heritage.
During his presentation, the linguist emphasized the cultural and linguistic richness of the greater Caribbean region, highlighting the diversity of Amerindian and Creole languages spoken throughout the area. He stressed the importance of preserving, protecting, and continuing to speak these languages as part of the development and identity of Caribbean peoples.
Todd Dandaré also called attention to the need to preserve oral traditions and protect collective memory, describing them as essential elements of cultural heritage.
The city of Praia became a center for international discussions on diaspora, cultural diversity, education, and identity during the conference. Todd Dandaré also took the opportunity to introduce Revista SER Caribe, where he serves as an honorary member of the Editorial Council.
Earlier this month, on May 2, Todd Dandaré was honored during the Colombo-Dutch Caribbean Encounter “Mma Pe’ipaasü” (“The land that unites us”) in Riohacha, La Guajira. The event also marked 200 years of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Colombia.
