“I am honored to officially take on the role of Cultural Diplomat for Aruba, based in the Netherlands,” Michael Lampe announced on social media on Saturday. After previously serving as a Member of Parliament for the AVP party, Lampe has now been appointed to this new position under the AVP-Futuro Cabinet. It marks the first time the Aruban government has created such a post.
Lampe said he accepts the responsibility with humility and deep respect for everyone who has dedicated themselves for years, with tireless love and passion, to developing Aruba’s cultural landscape.
The mission of a Cultural Diplomat is to build bridges, empower the creative sector, and strengthen and connect Aruba’s cultural community with international opportunities.
“I am grateful to the Prime Minister, who is also the Minister of Culture, and to the Government of Aruba for recognizing the value of culture and understanding the need to place culture at the center of sustainable development and the island’s future,” Lampe said.
As an artist and a member of Aruba’s small but dynamic cultural and creative sector, Lampe believes that true diplomacy starts in the community — through music, art, history, on the streets, and in all the places where culture lives and thrives. Culture, he added, is not simply a show, but the heart and soul of who we are and how we connect with each other and the world.
“I firmly believe we must value our people so they can achieve their dreams, instead of waiting to recognize their worth only after those dreams come true,” Lampe shared.
“Culture belongs to all of us, no matter our political colors. I stand here to encourage our youth, professionals, and future leaders: don’t be afraid to follow your vision, your potential, your dreams, and to express your culture. None of us are perfect, but culture is our foundation and our strength as a community. Let’s work together for our island,” Lampe concluded.
