Minister Geoffrey Wever: New law gives consumers stronger protection

by Nicole

Aruba’s Parliament has approved a new law aimed at giving consumers better protection when purchasing products or services. Minister of Economic Affairs Geoffrey Wever shared the news during a recent press conference focused on the new Consumer Law.

Minister Wever announced that Parliament unanimously passed the “Administrative Enforcement of Consumer Protection” law last week. This legislation is designed to protect all individuals in their role as consumers—anyone who buys goods or services.

For years, there have been complaints from organizations, businesses, and members of the community about the lack of proper consumer protection. Although Aruba’s civil code already contains rules intended to safeguard consumer rights, these rules are often difficult to enforce in practice.

Wever acknowledged the problem, noting that “many times, consumers don’t know where to turn.” He pointed out that legal options are available, but starting a formal case isn’t always realistic. “If someone buys a blender and doesn’t get the warranty they were promised, they’re unlikely to begin a legal battle over it,” he said.

Improving consumer rights
The minister emphasized that consumers deserve stronger, more accessible protection. That’s why, 18 months ago, work began on drafting the new law—with the support and approval of the Netherlands. Wever noted that the Dutch government even covered the costs of developing the legislation, at his request.

Last Friday, the law was officially approved by Parliament. It gives enforcement power to the Aruba Fair Trade Authority, which has been responsible for promoting fair competition since January 2024.

This move will allow the authority to take action against unfair business practices, such as price-fixing and anti-competitive behavior, helping to create a more transparent and accountable marketplace for consumers in Aruba.
