Navy intercepts three drug shipments in the Caribbean

by Nicole

The Dutch naval vessel HNLMS Groningen intercepted three drug shipments in the Caribbean region within a single week, keeping a total of 1,653 kilograms of narcotics off the streets. The interceptions took place on April 4, 5, and 9, but have only now been made public.

The first incident occurred on April 4, when a patrol aircraft from the Caribbean Coast Guard spotted a suspicious vessel. HNLMS Groningen immediately deployed its NH90 helicopter and two fast interceptor boats (Frisc’s) in response.

As the suspects attempted to flee, they threw packages overboard. They ignored stop signals and warning shots, prompting the helicopter crew to disable the boat’s outboard engines. A joint team from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Dutch Marine Corps then boarded the vessel and seized 921 kilograms of marijuana.

Second and third seizures follow swiftly

Less than 24 hours later, another fast smuggling vessel was detected during a routine patrol. This interception also required the vessel to be stopped by force, resulting in the seizure of 342 kilograms of cocaine.

A third operation on April 9 led to the confiscation of 145 kilograms of marijuana and 245 kilograms of cocaine. All seized narcotics were handed over to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Long-standing role in counter-narcotics operations

Since the end of January, HNLMS Groningen has been serving as the station ship in the Caribbean region. One of its main missions is conducting counter-drug operations, in cooperation with both the U.S. Coast Guard and the Caribbean Coast Guard.

To date, HNLMS Groningen has intercepted more than 5,000 kilograms of illegal drugs in six separate operations.
