Over the next two weeks, the Defense Caribbean Region will conduct a hurricane emergency relief exercise named ‘Windward Express’ on Saint Maarten and Saba. During this exercise, soldiers will team up with local security partners to enhance preparedness and cooperation, ensuring that the military can respond swiftly and effectively after a hurricane.
The exercise will involve several Defense units, including Marines from the Detachment Saint Maarten, Marines from Marine Squadron Carib Aruba, and soldiers from Curaçao. Additionally, the Marine Ship HLNMS Pelikaan, boat groups with their FRISC boats, and other supporting units will also participate.

Upon arrival on Saint Maarten, the units will rotate between Saint Maarten and Saba for various drills. These activities will help the military understand the unique conditions of the islands and work closely with local partners such as government organizations, NGOs, and businesses critical to emergency response.
By conducting ‘Windward Express’ in the Windward Islands, the military aims to be well-prepared to provide emergency aid, support civil authorities, and maintain public order immediately following a hurricane.
