During a press conference on Friday morning, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes addressed circulating rumors about the leadership of the MEP party.
She dismissed these rumors, noting that some people on the island enjoy creating drama, which has unfortunately led others to believe their claims. Wever-Croes reaffirmed that she was elected leader of MEP two years ago at a congress and has since committed herself to guiding the party into the next election.
“Our next leadership election will take place in two years. At that time, we will determine whether I will seek re-election or if someone else will step forward. Currently, there is no discussion about the leadership of the MEP party,” she emphasized. She also mentioned that cultivating new leaders is always a goal for the party.
“There will come a time when I want to pursue other opportunities and pass the party leadership to someone younger, with fresh ideas and energy. My aim is to see more individuals stepping up as leaders within MEP. This is important to me, not just in MEP but throughout my career. It’s not just about my visibility; I want to see others grow into leadership roles because I know that one day I will step aside, and others will carry on. That’s the responsible approach,” she stated.
As for the MEP party, there is no internal debate about leadership. Everyone is currently focused on preparing candidate lists, which has generated some tension and speculation. However, within the party, there is no division or discontent. “We recognize that we are the largest party, we are confident in our victory on December 6th, and we understand that unity is our strength,” the outgoing Prime Minister concluded.
