Police union raises concerns over stalled construction of new beach police station

by Nicole

The Police Union (SPA) has voiced growing concern over the lack of progress on a promised new building for the Strandpolitie (Beach Police) in front of the St. Regis Hotel. Despite earlier assurances that construction would begin soon, no visible work has taken place, and communication from involved parties has been minimal.

The issue has been ongoing for several weeks. According to the union, the agreement was that a new, modern two-story facility would be built to replace the outdated station currently in use. The original building had to be cleared due to requests from nearby property owners. Following negotiations, all parties agreed that the old structure would be demolished and a new one built slightly further down the site.

Although a groundbreaking ceremony was held, more than six months have passed without any sign of construction—no foundation work has started, and no building materials have appeared. The union was told the new station would be ready within eight months, but with no visible progress, hopes are fading.

Union representative Rodney Solognier described the situation as deeply disappointing. He has attempted to contact both the St. Regis Hotel and the landowner for clarification but has received no response. The Minister of Justice, who is still in the process of familiarizing himself with different government departments, currently has limited ability to act.

The need for a new facility is pressing. The old building was designed to accommodate a single shift, but today multiple shifts operate from the cramped space. The union believes the agreement was that the hotel would be responsible for building the new police station, and they are urging for an update and action on the matter.

Response from St. Regis Hotel

In response to inquiries, a representative from the St. Regis Hotel clarified that the hotel is not responsible for the police building project. According to them, the agreement regarding the new station is strictly between the government, the police force, and the legal owner of the land. The hotel simply rents the location and has no involvement in construction or related obligations.

The union now awaits further clarification from the responsible parties and hopes construction will begin soon.
