To mark World Breastfeeding Week, Minister Melvin Wyatt-Ras met with two leading experts in breastfeeding and early childhood nutrition: Caroll Kock from Pro Lechi Mama (PLM) and Minouche Lopez, IBCLC of Lacthera Aruba.
The meeting included a visual presentation and a constructive discussion that shed light on the current state of breastfeeding in Aruba.
Key facts from the presentation include:
- 85% of mothers begin breastfeeding.
- Only 41% start within the first hour after birth.
- Just 19% continue breastfeeding until six months after birth.
Exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months is widely recognized by global health authorities like WHO and UNICEF as one of the most effective ways to promote long-term health and development. Breastfeeding helps prevent infections, strengthens the immune system, and lays a strong foundation for lifelong well-being.
A local study, conducted with Wit Gele Kruis and the Public Health Directorate, revealed that many mothers stop breastfeeding not because they don’t want to, but due to a lack of support, information, or time.
This highlights the need for stronger support systems for mothers at home, in healthcare settings, and in the workplace.
Breastfeeding is more than an act of love—it is a powerful public health strategy.
International research (from the World Bank, WHO, and UNICEF) shows that every dollar invested in breastfeeding promotion can yield up to $35 in long-term health and economic benefits.
The Ministry commends the ongoing work of Pro Lechi Mama and Lacthera Aruba, who dedicate themselves daily to promoting a healthy start for every child.
“Investing in mothers is investing in the future of our community,” said Minister Wyatt-Ras.
