Aruba mourns its fourth traffic fatality

On Sunday night at around 11:15 pm, the driver of the black Kia Sportage struck a male pedestrian near Aruba Bank in Camacuri. The accident was so severe that the pedestrian passed away at the scene. This marks the fourth traffic-related fatality this year.

Deputy spokesperson for the Aruban Police Force (KPA), Liliana Rasmijn, stated that the police received a report of a serious accident near Aruba Bank, where a vehicle struck a pedestrian. Upon arrival, the police found a man lying motionless on the side of the road.

An ambulance was called to the scene, but paramedics were unable to do anything further for the victim. By 11:45 pm, Dr. Texier confirmed the death of A.J.B., a 54-year-old male born in Brazil. It is believed he worked here in Aruba, but the KPA has not yet been able to locate any friends or family.

At the scene, the police tested the driver of the Kia Sportage and he was later arrested for driving under the influence. The driver was taken into police custody and will have to provide a statement regarding the accident.

Rasmijn went on to explain that various police departments were present at the scene to conduct necessary investigations. Traffic officials and prosecutors also attended to deliberate and determine the next steps. A.J.B.’s body was then taken into custody.

Police have been busy with several incidents throughout the week. In the early hours of Sunday, a vehicle struck a pedestrian in front of Lekker Bar, whose condition remains critical. With many accidents occurring, drivers are urged to slow down and remain vigilant on the roads. Avoid drinking and driving, put away cell phones, and pay attention to the road. On behalf of the Aruban Police Force, Rasmijn extends condolences to A.J.B.’s family.
