As long as people continue using the bathroom, the RWZI and incinerator issues will prevail

While it’s not the rainy season that is causing Aruba to suffer from water-related issues. If the situation with the wastewater treatment plant continues, the island will soon face a flood caused by a different kind of water. One that is not at all pleasant for the island’s economy.

The situation is worrying and unhygienic. The tanks at Zeewijk are overflowing and sewage water is flooding into the streets. All of this is caused by the plant at Parkietenbos being closed to carry out some work there.

All the sewage problems mentioned above, according to the official, stem from the issue with the deteriorating wastewater treatment plant (RWZI). The excessive sludge produced at the plant must be incinerated, one way or another.

The problem worsened after a court ruling in a case initiated by a resident of Parkietenbos. The decision resulted in the incinerator being shut down. “Due to the resident’s case, the incinerator was put on hold.” This led to the continued production of sludge. Since this person initiated the case in court and got the court ruling, people haven’t stopped going to the bathroom in Aruba. Everyone has continued to use the bathroom and do their business. “This waste has to go somewhere, and it has started to back up and disrupt operations.”

The situation mentioned above has caused a domino effect, now putting pressure on the Zeewijk plant. Regarding this, the official said that her colleague Ursell Arends is in charge of waste processing, and he assured the prime minister that he is working on the problem.
