Edgard Vrolijk: Same-Sex Marriage Law and RWZI to be Addressed in Mid-June

The Parliament of Aruba has two pending meetings, namely the RWZI issue and the same-sex marriage law.

With dates requested to address both topics, the President of Parliament, Edgard Vrolijk, indicated that there is a request from parliamentarian Misha Raymond. According to Vrolijk, he plans to grant this request this week, despite it being a busy time. Next week, there are some pending meetings, such as the RWZI.

At the moment, these matters have a bit of priority and urgency, especially considering their economic impact. He mentioned having a date in mind, which he will announce to the parliamentarians. At the end of the day, they can send a request to schedule a session, although it is not usual to make such requests.

As a democracy, they are given the opportunity to make the request. However, in the end, it is the President of Parliament who decides on the date. According to Vrolijk, this is what is stipulated in the regulations. The President of Parliament selects a date, which he has already considered.

The date he is thinking of is one that ensures tranquility. At the moment, it is necessary to create a calm platform, because there is a lot of unrest as of late. He believes this will allow everyone to return with a clear mind and vote. This will be final, and the decision must be respected.

He believes that the court’s decision to postpone until July 12th allows Parliament the space to complete the process. It needs to be done calmly because, at the end of the day, the parliamentarians serve the country, regardless of their personal opinions on same-sex marriage.
