High Council postpones decision on same-sex marriage

It seems that the topic of same-sex marriage continues to face obstacles in Aruba. Information received by 24ora.com indicates that the “Hoge Raad” (High Council) has decided to postpone their decision date.

This information was obtained from various sources, albeit none of which are official.

As is known, the initial date to announce the decision regarding the same-sex marriage law in Aruba and CuraƧao was set for May 31st. The court had already decided that this should be allowed, but the governments of the two islands chose to appeal this decision.

The Attorney General provided his advice to the High Council in December, concluding that there was no reason to deviate from or change the court’s decision. Therefore, there was no reason to order the court to review the case.

During the hearing of the case last November, it was announced that the decision was expected by May 31st, or possibly earlier. However, new information indicates that the High Council has decided to postpone the decision until July 12th. Attempts to contact the spokesperson for the court of appeals have, so far, been unsuccessful.

It is interesting to know the reasons behind the postponement.
