Setty Yarzagaray: It’s hard being the only proponent in MEP for same-sex marriage

On May 8th, the Parliament of Aruba discussed the law on same-sex marriage. This bill was presented by the factions Accion21, MAS, and RAIZ. It was a law that brought a lot of discussion among the public and, of course, within the political parties as well. At least within MEP and AVP, there was a noticeable division when it came to voting. In AVP, three members voted in favor and two against. In MEP, eight voted against, and only one parliamentarian voted in favor.

That parliamentarian is Setty Yarzagaray, the only one in her faction who voted in favor. She told a heartfelt story about her sibling, who is gay, and she felt the need to stand up for them. Therefore, it was more a vote to support a family member. Recently, during an interview with 24ora.com, she stated that it was difficult as a member of MEP to vote in favor when her entire faction voted against it. She, of course, respected their decision and vice versa.

According to the parliamentarian, she wished there could be a referendum on this topic, but the law did not allow it. The group that initiated the case against the government has lost twice. They are now awaiting the judgment of the Court of Cassation. However, everything indicates that Aruba is discriminating, considering the advice that the Attorney General gave to the Court of Cassation.

Setty stands firm in her position and will not change it. She is pro and will remain pro. It is not easy to diverge from others, but the parliamentarian is aware that there is a group that supports her.
