With the Opening of the Maria Convent Building: University of Aruba’s SISSTEM Faculty can Expand

The official opening of the Maria Convent buildings took place at the University of Aruba yesterday. This will be the new location for the faculty of Sustainable Island Solutions through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (SISSTEM). Several dignitaries were present at the open ceremony, including Governor Alfonso Boekhoudt, Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes, Minister Geoffrey Wever, Minister Endy Croes, Minister Xiomara Maduro, and European Union Ambassador Rene Van Nes.

The opening of the SISSTEM faculty is a significant achievement for the future of education in Aruba, given the opportunities that the new faculty offers. It also contributes to efforts to revitalize Oranjestad into a more modern and dynamic city. Students, both local and international, will have access to bachelor’s and master’s programs at a global level, offered in collaboration with the renowned KU Leuven of Belgium.

Economic diversification is a key goal for Aruba, requiring the adoption of a “Knowledge Economy” system. SISSTEM will play a crucial role in developing a sustainable knowledge-based economy.

Minister Wever, acting as the Territorial Authorizing Officer (TAO) for European Union projects, emphasized the immense value of this initiative for the country. “The progress of the University of Aruba will have a tremendously positive impact on our community. The advanced education provided will prepare our students for future challenges and contribute to a more sustainable and innovative Aruba,” said the minister.

Minister Geoffrey Wever expressed great satisfaction and thanked the European Union Commission for the funding that made this possible. The renovation of the historic Maria Convent building was carried out in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the local contractor Albo N.V. The renovation work resulted in a space ready to welcome the new generation of SISSTEM students.

The Government of Aruba extends its profound gratitude to all partners, including the University of Aruba, the European Union, UNDP, KU Leuven, and Albo N.V. for their efforts and dedication in realizing this project. The official opening of Maria Convent and the SISSTEM faculty is a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and vision for a more advanced and sustainable Aruba.
