Minister Geoffrey Wever: general cleaning of downtown has commenced

On June 17th, the start of a cleanup in Caya Betico F. Croes took place. This work is expected to last between 15 to 20 work days and is part of the holistic effort of maintenance and revitalization of Oranjestad, which is a priority of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Minister Geoffrey Wever.

Tasks will include trimming the bushes along Caya Betico F. Croes up to the gas station at the end of the street. General cleaning of the area will be conducted, along with the replacement of existing trash bins. The new trash bins are made of 100% recycled plastic, produced in Aruba by Plastic Beach Party. These new bins have double the capacity of the old ones and will include compartments for waste separation, supporting community efforts and the need for waste separation.

“This is another example of the Aruba government’s investment in addressing necessary improvements in the area in a structured, strategic, and responsible manner. In recent months, we have been actively executing our Downtown Revitalization Plan,” stated Minister Wever. All these efforts are necessary to create more safety, accessibility, and to maintain the natural character of our downtown area.

The work is expected to take approximately 15 – 20 days to complete. On the first night alone, 30 yards of trash and vegetation were cleared from the La Moderna and Penha area. Work is conducted at night to minimize disruption to pedestrian flow and traffic.

Progress on the beautification of Wilhelminastraat and the renovation of Cas Veneranda is advancing as planned, while efforts are made to bring more government departments back to our downtown. “Increased traffic, pedestrians, and commercial viability are ultimately our final goals,” according to the leader.
