Shailiny Tromp-Lee (MEP) seizes the law: another tie means the same-sex marriage law did not pass

After the meeting on the same-sex marriage bill encountered various obstacles, a second vote was scheduled for today at 2:00 PM. Despite a bit of a delay, the vote did take place today. The vote was actually supposed to take place on June 18, however, Parliamentarian Arthur Vallejo, would have been absent that day, so it was postponed to June 19th.

At the start of the meeting, it was already known that the outcome would be the same as the last meeting, with 20 people present. The final result once again ended in a tie, which led the Parliament to reject the same-sex marriage bill. Shailiny Tromp-Lee once again played a decisive role in this meeting. It could be said that she seized the law. She remained absent from the meeting, which made it clear that today’s result would be the same as the last meeting on May 8.

The first meeting took place on May 8, during which a lot of controversy arose. In the end, it turned out that Shailiny Tromp-Lee was the one who abstained from voting, and the result was a tie of 10 votes in favor and 10 against. The law prescribes that in such a case, a second round of voting must occur within 30 days, and if this also results in a tie, the bill is discarded.

On the other hand, there is still the pending ruling from the Court of Cassation, where the Attorney General advised the Court of Cassation to uphold the decision of the Court of December 2022, which stated that same-sex marriage must be allowed. Initially, it was set for May 30th, but it has been changed to the 12th of July.
