Large Fire at Barcadera: Firefighters Expected to have it under control by Noon

A major fire broke out early Saturday morning at the Ecotech facilities in Barcadera, causing thick black smoke to spread to nearby areas, including Cas Paloma, Parkietenbos, Bucutiweg, and surrounding neighborhoods. Authorities were forced to intervene immediately and take precautionary measures to protect affected residents.

At 5:00 am, the police received a call from the Fire Department’s OVD, reporting the fire in the rear part of Ecotech. According to police spokesperson Liliana Rasmijn, firefighters responded to the scene to combat the fire but encountered hazardous materials complicating the extinguishment.

“We decided to let the fire burn to avoid prolonged smoke. After containing the flammable material, using water could extend the fire’s duration,” explained Roland van Cleef, Duty Officer of the Fire Department.

Police alerted residents of Bucutiweg, Cas Paloma, and areas near the airport about the situation, advising them to seek temporary refuge in other zones due to the smoke. Ensuring the health of the inhabitants is a priority. They were advised to temporarily leave the area until the smoke dissipates, as emphasized by Rasmijn.

Rene Ridderstap of CMO highlighted the importance of precautionary measures for residents, especially those with delicate health. Efforts are ongoing to control the fire. Vulnerable individuals were advised to take shelter with family or friends until the area is declared safe.

Van Cleef assured that although the fire would continue for a few more hours, it was under control and did not pose a significant risk of spreading. The fire was expected to be extinguished around noon. The situation is continuously evaluated to decide on the next steps, according to Ridderstap.

Meanwhile, police and CMO are prepared to assist those unable to evacuate on their own. Anyone in need of help can contact the emergency center for support and temporary relocation, Ridderstap indicated.
