HOH Academy inspires and collaborates with “JA IK ARUBA” Foundation

HOH Academy Department at Horacio Oduber Hospital (HOH) Organizes Special Tour for Colegio Nigel Matthew Students in Connection with “JA IK ARUBA” Foundation’s In the Picture Program. The JA IK ARUBA Foundation’s vision aligns with HOH Academy’s ongoing “HOH Inspires” program, aimed at inspiring and educating young people in various medical professions. A group of ten students learned about different roles within the departments of dialysis, radiology, and operating room/anesthesia.

An Educational Morning

The program began in the classroom of HOH Academy, where demonstrations and comprehensive explanations were provided about what happens in the operating room. Among other things, they explained roles such as an operating room assistant, an anesthesia nurse, a surgeon, and even a warehouse manager and what their responsibilities are. Practical demonstrations were conducted, and they even had the opportunity to try on special operating room attire. In the dialysis department, they received information about what dialysis entails, the role of a dialysis nurse, the machines for different types of dialysis, and the impact on the life of a dialysis patient.

Finally, they visited the radiology department where they learned about the different types of machines and systems used to take pictures of the body for diagnostic purposes, such as X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans. At the end of the morning, the students had to prepare a presentation to demonstrate what they had learned and their thoughts on the subject.

“We hope we have provided them with a day filled with inspiration,” said Lenie Denteneer, manager of HOH Academy.

Inspiration

The students from Colegio Nigel Matthew were delighted with this educational morning. Student Joshua Croes expressed that he learned a lot about the operating room and found it very interesting considering his aspiration to become a surgeon. He learned more about the tools used in the operating room and also about the stress that a surgeon may experience.

Student Alan Zara also desires to become a surgeon. He commented that he learned quite interesting things about the operating room and also about the kidneys. The part he liked the most was the operating room because he also aspires to become a surgeon.

Despite not wanting to pursue a career in medicine, student Victoria Uribe believes it is “great” to visit different places to experience different professions and see what is possible.

Collaboration

HOH Academy and the foundation see a lot of talent in Aruba, and for this reason, they have started working together so that these talents can explore all the different possibilities available here in Aruba for their professions. Jalken Antonia, founder and director of JA IK ARUBA, started the “In the Picture” program where young people learn work ethics and personal leadership. Many young people do not know what to do in the future, and with this program, they visit a different company with a group of students each time. This way, young people can closely see the different functions in practice and what is important in the workplace.

The students from Colegio Nigel Matthew thank the Hospital and JA IK ARUBA for this wonderful opportunity to see different professions in medical care. It was a fruitful morning and surely will be repeated by the Hospital, which wishes to attract and inspire our young people in the community towards a future career in medical care.
