St. Francis of Assisi Church vandalized in Oranjestad

On Monday morning, at around 7:30 am, when the doors of the St. Francis of Assisi Church were opened, it was discovered that a window at the front had been broken. Upon further investigation, it was found that apparently someone threw a beer bottle at the window, shattering one of its glass panels.

The shattered window left shards of glass scattered everywhere inside. This needed to be cleaned carefully, as there were tiny glass fragments on the benches where people sit as well. Not to mention the shattered pieces of glass from the beer bottle that was used to break the window. The parish community expressed their indignation at the lack of respect for the house of the Lord.

A bystander commented that he was involved in an argument with another person. During the argument, the other person threw a beer bottle in his direction, but missed, hitting the church window and breaking it.

This incident is not the first in the area. Last month, another act of vandalism was reported at the Maria Convent building, located just next to the church. On that occasion, a window was also broken and the building’s water system was damaged. Such incidents generate a growing sense of insecurity in the community, causing concern among the faithful who, when arriving early for their church services, find their temple damaged.

The repetition of these acts of vandalism has led the community to reflect on the need to improve security measures in this area.
