After fatal accident: Government wants to regulate water sports

Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes attended a meeting organized by DIP together with other governmental and non-governmental departments in charge of watersports. This first meeting will take place while the Public Prosecutor’s office and Maritime Police conclude their investigation of the unfortunate accident which recently cost the life of a young tourist.

Premier Wever-Croes explained that various ideas have come forward which resonate the communities’ want for more regulation. The desire to see less water sports on our beaches and waters has also come forward.

Together with DIP, DOW, ATA, AHATA, Directie Scheepvaart and Beach Police, the current situation was deliberated and improvement for the future was discussed. “The government takes the situation very seriously and wants the safety and security of our locals and tourists to be number one priority.”

Towards the end, the Prime Minister mentioned that she had the opportunity to talk to the parents of the young girl who passed away right before they left the island. It was a painful moment and the parents were inconsolable and traumatized. On the other hand, the parents were grateful for the attention they received from Aruba.

“Now, Aruba must ensure that our beaches are safe for locals and tourists,” the Prime Minister concluded.
