Prime Minister: Possibility of introducing exceptions to the Wever-Croes norm

Last week, the Parliament of Aruba discussed the Wever-Croes norm which related to the ‘normalization’ of compensation for directors and executives of state-owned companies. According to Wever-Croes, some of the salaries are even five times as much as that of the Ministers. Thus, this must be discussed as a requirement before eliminating the 12.6% next January.

Last week, WEB unions have come forward to express that the pay of their members must not be changed without negotiation. They have been concerned for some time now about the ‘trickle down effect’ which would mean that key positions within the companies will be affected by offering significantly less compensation.

In turn, this will also cause Aruba natives and young professionals to be less incentivized to return to Aruba.

During a press conference on Monday, the Minister President, Evelyn Wever-Croes, was asked if the effects were taken into consideration. Wever-Croes commented that they have been in dialogue during the design of the law. Wever-Croes also mentioned that for SETAR for example, they must keep salaries internationally competitive to attract specific personnel who have the right knowledge. Within this context, the possibility must exist to introduce expectations within the law.
