Aruba’s first Gender Policy presented to State Secretary Van Huffelen

On Tuesday morning, The University of Aruba hosted a conference organized in cooperation with the Government of Aruba. During the conference, the ‘Aruba National Gender Policy’ was launched.

The title of the conference was ‘Strong Women Choose to Challenge,’ and represented and recognized all strong women and the idea to choose equality of gender. During the occasion, the first of its kind paper titled ‘Aruba National Gender Policy’ was presented to the Secretary of State, Alexandra van Huffelen. Various women shared the stage during the conference to break the ‘glass ceiling’ and share their story. Stories that were surely inspiring to others. Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes mentioned during the conference that it was especially essential for female leaders to sit together to give their opinion and for these opinions to be heard and valued.

In her discourse, Wever-Croes also mentioned that she was very proud to be the first female leader of the country and emphasized that she will not be the last but remains conscious of the work that still needs to be done. “It is my wish and hope that the ‘Aruba National Gender Policy’ will help with closing of the ‘gap’, and empower female children and adults to promote gender equality.”

The Aruba Gender Policy has a ‘framework’ to monitor and evaluate the implementation process to attain a goal more effectively. “I call upon all female leaders to be the change, to take action in challenging the existing norm. Let us work together to move forward and create a stronger and more resilient Aruba,” the Prime Minister emphasized.

Aruba now has its first ‘Gender Policy’ for a more equal and sustainable development of gender rights. Moreover, the paper will be presented in Aruba’s Parliament and will be published on the Government’s website.
