Even despite the additional inspections and a new modern radar, boats are still attempting to enter our waters illegally from Venezuela. These ships are oftentimes carrying illegal immigrants who are trying to bypass immigation and customs, and/or illegal substances such as drugs.
A little before midnight, the police in the radar room detected a new boat entering Aruba’s territory, and once again, coming from Venezuela.
The police informed the Kustwacht and the helicopter as well as the K-9 unit was dispatched to inspect the area.
The Coastguard encountered the boat and a chase was started right away. Those on the boat started throwing packages offboard during the chase. In the end, the Coastguard managed to intercept the boar and detained a total of 7 people. The helicopter continued the search for the packages that were thrown off board, which are suspected to be drugs, as those were likely still drifting in the ocean.
