Fires all around the island

It is a tradition for Aruba’s public to celebrate the Day of Dera Gay San Juan on the 24th of June. As is custom, they light a fire around their home or together in the neighborhood.

They take this opportunity to burn any trash that they might have lying around, and as a result, the fires sometimes get out of hand. This means that the fire department had its hands full all day yesterday as they rushed to various places on the island to extinguish the flames.

It is definitely the busiest day of the year for the fire department, so all units were active on the streets. On more than one occasion, the trucks even had to be refilled.

Fire trucks could be seen in Noord, Playa, Sta Cruz, Piedra Plat, Savaneta, and San Nicolas. Unfortunately, they were not always met with friendly citizens, as not everyone was happy that they came to extinguish the flames.  In the end, however, it is their number one priority to make sure each and every one of us is safe, which is why the fires had to be taken care of.
