Dutch Kingdom to host its own Special Olympic Games

The Dutch Kingdom will be hosting its own Special Olympics Games on the 4th and 5th of November in Bonaire. During these two days, a total of 200 athletes will gather from six Caribbean islands as well as from The Netherlands. Globally, 190 countries organize Special Olympics games which are aimed to improve the lives of those who are disabled.

The organizations involved are Special Olympics Bonaire, the Indebon sport’s department and the FKPD care institution guided by Niels Cannegieter (tournament director in The Netherlands in 2024 in Breda/Tilburg), supported by “Olimpico Special Caribe”, Special Olympics International, and Special Olympics The Netherlands.

A local airline will be sponsoring the flights for participants from Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, Saba, Curacao, and Aruba. Like other Special Olympic Games, the costs for accommodation, transport, food and drink will fall under the organization. We hope that all islands will be represented.

This initiative aligns with the government’s desire to improve accessibility and participation of those with intellectual disabilities.
