New project launched to help stop domestic abuse titled ‘I Stopped It’

According to local sources, domestic abuse has drastically increased in Aruba. These instances of violence usually involve one person injuring a romantic partner, but it can also be aggression against a family member or friend.

Usually, when violence occurs within a romantic relationship, the abuse can be physical, sexual, emotional, psychological, verbal, or general aggression and threats. This type of abuse is always more damaging than the eyes can see.

In an attempt to limit such violence in our community, the “Fundacion Telefon pa Hubentud Aruba” together with HIAS Aruba have developed a project titled “I Stopped It”.

‘I Stopped It’ is a preventative project that attempts to reduce violence among children, young adults, and adults. Since February of this year, children in 8 schools have been introduced to “I Stopped It”. During 4 sessions, they will receive information concerning violence in relationships and the series will end with the children promising that they will try to contribute to stopping violence at school, at home, and in the community.

After the children have received the sessions, the young adults and adults will be introduced to ‘I Stopped It’ as well. Information will be shared through 3 videos that will revolve around violence.

“I Stopped It” is financed by the American Government.
