Ongoing investigation regarding fatal accident on L.G. Smith Boulevard

On Tuesday night at around 8:00 p.m., the police closed L.G. Smith Boulevard in relation to their investigation surrounding the accident that took place last week.

They used a police motorcycle to try and recreate the accident as much as possible, to try and get to the bottom of what happened during the fatal collision.

The driver of the silver Kia Picanto involved in the crash was also present to inform the police on how the accident happened. As he is now involved in this crime, his lawyer Gabri de Hoogd was also present to advise the suspect how to answer the police’s questions.

THE ACCIDENT

Just after midnight on Wednesday morning, a serious accident occurred at the L.G. Smith Boulevard and Adrian Lacle Boulevard intersection. The vehicles involved were a silver Kia Picanto and a motorcycle.

Various police units arrived at the scene to tend to the accident and an ambulance was called to aid the injured. Tree ambulances arrived at the scene and started tending to the two people who had been injured during the collision.

Due to the impact of the crash, the two individuals on the motorcycle were found nearly 30 meters from where the initial crash took place. Both victims were rushed to the hospital and have been in critical condition in intensive care ever since.

On Sunday afternoon, the decision was made to take Luisa F. Torres off of life support, making her Aruba’s eighth traffic-related fatality of 2023.

DETENTION

The driver who hit the motorcycle had initially been detained after the accident. The reason behind his detention was that he was suspected to have been driving under the influence of alcohol. Tests taken at the scene were inconclusive, but his behavior later at the police station had authorities believing that his alcohol level was beneath the legal limit, so he was sent home.

Now that the passenger on the motorcycle has passed away, and the driver of the motorcycle is on his way to Colombia for specialized medical care, authorities have decided to arrest the driver once again. It appears he is now wanted for culpable homicide.
