Mystery solved: DOW discovers the cause of the sewage issue in Monserat

We reported a sewage issue earlier in Monserat, in which filthy sewer water was spilling onto the streets in front of an apartment complex. According to DOW’s “Beheer Infrastructuur” Daryl Leu, the issue in Monserat is connected to community housing. The main issue is caused by an accumulation of trash such as clothes or food waste that people keep throwing into the sewer.

According to Leu, they discovered the issue when they went to pump the water to stop it from overflowing.  The pump sucked up all the water in order to send it to the plant, but got clogged when cloth got sucked inside the pump, as it is not designed to handle anything besides water.

Apparently, this is not the first time that this issue has occurred. People have disposed of their trash into the sewers before and because of this, DOW makes it a habit to check this specific location at least three times a week. Unfortunately, even three times a week does not appear to be enough, as it has still overflowed. It is not possible to monitor the situation 24/7.

They are now going to have to inform the neighborhood to stop disposing of anything inside of the sewers. Clothes and other household waste should not be permitted into the sewers as it causes an overflow. The community has to pitch in with this issue, as they are the cause of it.
