The government must pay Amsterdam Manor for enduring foul odors

For many years, Amsterdam Manor has been experiencing the effects of foul odors and flies caused by the water purification plant in Bubali (RWZI). For years, discussions have taken place with the government to find the best solution, as this issue affects Aruba’s economic pillar and the island’s reputation. However, these discussions were repeatedly postponed.

An allocation of 16 million was included in the 2022 budget, but mysteriously, it was later removed from the budget. Now, the issue has come to the attention of the government again. The court has decided that the government acted unjustly towards Amsterdam Manor and must compensate it for all the years of unresolved problems, starting from 2002 until a definitive solution is found.

This decision was reached on December 13th of last year.

The final decision is that the country of Aruba acted unjustly by not taking sufficient measures against the disturbances caused by the RWZI, in the form of foul odors and the accompanying flies.

Aruba has been condemned to compensate the hotel for the damages it has suffered and will continue to suffer since 2002, throughout the period when the RWZI was not properly maintained. This includes the period when the wastewater was not adequately processed, causing the disturbances.
