Floating pier obstructs fishermen at the center of the Spanish Lagoon

A group of fishermen at the Spanish Lagoon Fishing Center is unhappy with the situation prevailing at the pier near Rancho Clemente. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, John Laurence explained that the construction carried out by a merchant has caused discontent because it blocked the entry and exit of fishing boats.

According to them, an American bought a piece of land on the cliff and he has a business renting kayak equipment. He decided to build a floating pier where he rents out the kayaks.

The problem is that he blocks the entry and exit of most fishing boats moored on the north side of the Spanish Lagoon Fishing Center pier. “This is an intolerable situation. I don’t know if he has the permits. If that’s the case, it’s intolerable to block the entry of a group trying to enter with their boats, meaning to hinder them,” Laurence said.

Since before December, he started adding another piece every time, until he reached the size that obstructs the fishermen.

He explained that the space for maneuvering became small for boats to enter or exit. For this reason, a letter was sent to DIP and Minister Ursell Arends, as they feel the situation has gotten out of hand. The pier is also floating and moves in all directions. They believe there will come a time when the boats at the Center will be isolated because they can no longer leave.

The fishermen urge the government, DIP, and the minister to intervene in this matter to put a stop to the illegal act that hinders the lives of the fishermen, some of whom have been working from this point for 40 years and are now being obstructed. They ask the relevant authorities to rectify the situation.
