Ursell Arends (RAIZ): Love has no color, gender, or religion

On Wednesday, May 8th, the Parliament of Aruba will discuss the Same-Sex Marriage Law. In a statement, the leader of RAIZ, Ursell Arends, compared this to a crossroad in life.

He continued by saying that there are moments during the journey of life where we encounter a fork in the road, where the decisions we make will define our direction and future. As a country, as a society, we have reached a crucial point that will define the type of society we are.

The fight for the right for same-sex couples to marry is not only about legalizing a relationship born out of love; it is about recognizing the inherent dignity and value of every individual, as human beings.

For RAIZ, this fight is not just a fight for a law to be passed, it is a fight based on the commitment anchored in our Statute, for harmony.

For RAIZ, this issue revolves around the principle that we stand for and embody the creation and existence of harmony in our society. An Aruba in harmony is an Aruba where unity, solidarity, respect, and empathy reign, and where everyone with a pure heart can feel their worth and have a place in our island.

RAIZ has planted the seed, and the fertile soil is our principles of equality, respect, inclusion, and the fruit of our harvest is harmony. This law will contribute to strengthening our community where there is no discrimination or difference for those who experience same-sex love.

When we deny same-sex couples the right to marry, we deny them the basic human right to happiness and well-being. We send a message that their love is somehow less valid and less valuable. We recognize their freedom to choose their own life, and yet we shackle them with chains of limitations.

We have been raised in an Aruba that is proud of its hospitality. An Aruba proud to say that on our small island, there is space for more than 90 other nationalities, as well as different religions living in harmony despite our differences. No matter where you come from, your skin color, your beliefs, or religion, Aruba has a place for you too. How much prouder we will be when we can say that in Aruba, no one is discriminated against based on who they choose to love. Shouldn’t everyone have the same right to live in harmony with each other?

The decision on May 8th remains in the hands of the individuals working in the highest organ of our country. The decision to recognize that every human being in Aruba has the fundamental right to express their love for one another freely.

At this crossroad, we can choose to stand on the correct side of history, the side that champions love over prejudice, equality over discrimination. We can choose harmony, respect, and peace.

Wednesday, May 8th is the moment for us to show the whole world that in Aruba, love has no gender.
