As the busy holiday season approaches, the Veterinary Service is reminding the public that anyone wishing to slaughter a goat, cow, or pig for human consumption must do so at the official slaughterhouse (Abattoir). Slaughtering animals at home is illegal and can pose health risks.
To accommodate increased demand during November and December, the Veterinary Service has announced that the slaughterhouse will operate Monday through Thursday mornings, from November 9 through December 17, 2026. Operations will resume on Tuesday, January 12, 2027.
The Veterinary Service emphasizes that all slaughtering services are available by appointment only. Anyone wishing to have one or more animals slaughtered must make arrangements in advance. This system is intended to ensure that operations run smoothly while maintaining proper hygiene standards and preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
Appointments can be scheduled by calling the Veterinary Service at 522-4310 or 522-4320, or by visiting its office at Barcadera 1.
Animal owners are urged to arrive at their scheduled appointment time. Those who arrive late or miss their appointment will need to schedule a new one. No animals will be accepted without a confirmed appointment.
The Veterinary Service also reminds the public that all meat must be collected on the same day the animal is slaughtered, after payment has been completed at the administration office. The slaughterhouse does not provide meat storage services and is not responsible for meat left behind.
The final day for slaughtering animals before the holiday closure is Thursday, December 17, 2026. As capacity will be limited, the public is encouraged to book appointments early rather than waiting until the last minute.
The Veterinary Service asks for everyone’s cooperation in following these procedures to ensure that slaughterhouse operations remain organized and efficient throughout the busy holiday period.
