Materials arrive for underground tunnel

C2 Civil & Construction is the company in charge of executing an ambitious and innovative project for Aruba. Build an underground tunnel for the guests of Embassy Suites to safely reach the beach on the other side of the road.

Yesterday the materials for the construction of the “pedestrian tunnel” arrived at the site of Embassy Suites. For the delivery of the materials, a police escort was needed to get to the hotel.

Egbert Groenewegen, Managing Director of the company, explained that the project had encountered a small delay. This is because they must come to a legal agreement with the Government, Watty Vos Boulevard, and Embassy Suites, whose lands are needed to dig the tunnel.

Another challenge was that they had to move the tunnel to avoid the cutting of trees. “We respect nature, so we did not want to remove any trees, he emphasized.

The complete project is set to be finalized next year.

This is the first underground tunnel in the history of the Caribbean. We considered rainfall when constructing the tunnel. “Water cannot enter easily. But if it does, there are two areas to pump the water back out,” he said.
