Department of Public Health reaches agreement to implement Protection Code

Each child abused is one too much; these were the words from the Project Leader for the Department of Public Health, Mrs. Grace Maduro. She has worked very hard together with everyone in the health sector to implement the Protection Code.

According to Mrs. Maduro, the Protection Code gives professionals in the Public Health sector the opportunity to train and be equipped based on the method of “Signs of Safety.” This method gives the professionals the tools to judge a situation when there is suspicion of child abuse. The Protection Code is very specific and gives a better explanation of how to handle child abuse with the main goal to offer protection for every child and youth of Aruba.

Wit Gele Kruis and Jeugd Gezondheid Zorg are in the process of reaching a “cooperation protocol” of all the specific steps that need to be implemented when dealing with a case of child abuse. This is important because, in this sector, they work with the “medical secrecy” of each client.

The main goal of the Protection Code is to make sure that every child in Aruba could grow in a safe environment and strengthen the care structure and the cooperation between professionals of different essential institutes, which play an important role in the lives of children and the youth.
