Aruba has more space to shelter victims of domestic violence

Fundacion pa Hende Muhe den Dificultad (FHMD), which is now called Fundacion Contra Violencia Relacional (FCVR), made another step in expanding its services to the community. Together with Prime Minister Evelyn Wever-Croes, they inaugurated the extension of their shelter that is now finished.

This was possible with the intermediation of the director of CEDE Aruba, Daniel Techlenborg, who told us that the Minister of Internal Affairs supports these kinds of projects. This project was managed by the outgoing president of the foundation, mr. Suzette Kock.

The previous shelter had only 5 rooms, and painful situations happened where we had to send clients back to their homes and the same situation they want to escape from. With this help, we now have 21 shelter spaces and surpass any other shelter in the region.

David Abrahams, a representative of the Netherlands, expressed his satisfaction that the Netherlands contributed to this significant project. The Netherlands is aware that domestic violence has a huge effect.

Tecklenborg and CEDE Aruba helped with making a file and plan, and after receiving financing, they coordinated the project as well.

It was noticeable that the foundation changed its name and logo. Audri Croes, the new president, explained that the clients aren’t only women. Although they are 80% of the clientele, there are also, for example, children and men. And the logo represents the breaking of the chain and cycle of violence.

The foundation was founded on November 24, 1995, and won the prestigious prize of ‘Appeltje van Oranje.’ They are situated in Primavera.
