Government: Solidarity is a word few people put into practice

Solidarity is a word used a lot these past few weeks by labor union STA regarding their members’ contribution to the FASE fund. A fund that is necessary because of the many people who lost their job. STA believes that the government could get a lot more income through a solidarity tax.

The Minister of Finance, Xiomara Maduro, reacted strongly because there were serious negotiations with the Netherlands to get the loan. “We could have plenty of discussions, but let’s see which battles we want to fight.”

The Minister explained that 60% of the labor force receive help and the rest live off FASE. If the 60% stops existing now, where is the solidarity? Since last year this is something she explained on various occasions to the labor unions. “I could not have slept peacefully if I allowed everyone to do what they wanted. I had to hold back when they came to me angry because they cannot understand why we didn’t come with a solidarity tax. I made the best decision that I could for our country,” the minister said with her hands placed on her heart.

Solidarity is a word that only a few people put into practice, the minister finalized saying.

Labor union STA represents the workers of Elmar, amongst others, who are battling the 12.6% that management wants to deduct from their salary.
