Medical waste and dead animals: situation not labeled as a crisis yet

The broken incinerator should be a real cause for concern. Mainly due to the medical waste and dead animals that are piling up at the dump. The Aruba Disaster Management Bureau (BRA) has also taken note of the situation.

This is not usually not in BRA jurisdiction, nevertheless, according to the director Rino Hermans, if the concerned parties find that the situation is reaching a crisis level,  BRA will have to be approached in order to resolve the national problem. “In a situation such as this, all stakeholders are brought together to try to stabilize the incident or the ciris,” says Hermans.

As of today, the situation has not been labeled a crisis as of yet because BRA has not yet been approached. It is sure, however, that the concerned parties will take this step once they realize how the situation is escalating.

Nevertheless, there is a risk level involved, and once BRA determines that things have gotten out of control, they will have the authority to step in and take the necessary steps to mitigate the problem. All stakeholders must be contacted and asked what their thoughts are on the matter. Based on that, a decision will be made.

All governmental decrees have to agree that a crisis is at hand. The process that follows is the same as in any crisis situation, with input from experts in the field.
