Neverending crime: yet another Aruparking machine destroyed

Aruparking’s constant vandalism is a headache for the government of Aruba. Cars parked illegally or without payment can receive a sticker, but the owner of the car cannot be fined.

However, the rampant crime issue in the city center is a real headache for everyone. They break into stores and destroy yet another Aruparking machine to get ahold of the money inside.

One of these Aruparking machines was found behind a school in San Nocolas, completely destroyed.

Our ministers are facing a dilemma, on the one hand, they are doing what they think is best to bring life back to the main street. On the other hand, they realize that the money invested into the Aruparking is going to waste and creating easy targets for thieves.

Days, weeks, months, and even years go by without a proper and concrete management plan for Aruparking. The government claims to want a structured approach; however, after nearly four years of promising to eliminate Aruparking, it still exists without the authority to issue fines, clamp cars, or even tow them away.

But, while the government tries to find a solution, parking in the city center remains a headache.

It’s worth remembering that former Minister Otmar Oduber came up with this project, a million-florin project that cost the country a lot of money but was not properly regulated.
