Son sentenced to four years in prison for assaulting his father

The court found Myron Bislik guilty of attempted homicide, as he tried to kill his own father. He struck his father repeatedly with a rock. Even though he denied it, they found his explanation unconvincing.

The accusation is that on January 16, 2024, he hit his father with a rock to his face and head, leaving him with severe injuries.

The young man claims this isn’t true, but says he punched his father in self-defense. On that day, a woman called the police for urgent help at a house in Mabon. When the patrol arrived, they found the woman and the rock outside.

Upon entering the house, they found puddles of blood in different parts of the house, mainly in the kitchen and bedroom. They passed through the kitchen and saw a trail of blood leading to the bedroom. There, they found the injured father lying on the bed and bleeding profusely.

They discovered that the father had a large wound on his head, along with bruises to his eyes, ears, a bite mark on his shoulder as well as scratch marks all over his back.

An ambulance was called to the scene immediately. Authorities then went to examine the weapon, which had sharp edges and was quite large.

In court, the accused claimed that his father threw vinegar at his face, which prompted him to strike back in self-defense. However,  there was no evidence of this found at the scene.

WHAT HAPPENED

Statements were taken from the woman who was present at the scene. She takes care of the house chores during the day and leaves at night. She was with the victim (GB) at the house when they heard a car arriving, followed by someone banging on the door.

As they reached the door, it was already broken. She informed Myron that she would call the police, and he became aggressive. He then picked up the rock, bashed his father over the head repeatedly, and then left the scene.

A statement was taken from the father in the hospital, where he was admitted. According to his statement, he doesn’t know why his son would treat him this way. The injuries he sustained required treatment in Colombia. There, he underwent surgery on his eyes and head, but he struggled to give a statement due to his poor vision and slow reactions. He could recall being hit four times with the rock. He requested that his son be kept away from him, as he fears for his life.

A medical report mentioned that one of the blows fractured his eye socket, and he suffered serious head injuries. To prevent further damage in the initial days, he was not permitted to sleep much and had to be woken up every two hours. Once stabilized, he was sent to Colombia to assess if his vision could be saved.

One of the injuries dislocated his shoulder, and his face was left with various cuts.

The accused said that his father spoke ill of him, which is what angered him. He had read a message on his phone from his uncle, adding to his rage, and went to confront his father.

However, according to the son, this is when his father threw vinegar at his face, causing his eyes to sting and him to fall over. This is when, according to Myron, his father attacked him and started choking him. Myron reacted by hitting back to defend himself, as well as biting his father’s shoulder to get loose.

The authorities were not convinced as there was no evidence to support this, and he didn’t seek medical help either due to lack of insurance. He had returned from Bonaire, where he had been living for a short time.

All in all, he claimed it was in self-defense, and that the other injuries were likely caused by his father hitting his head or face against the wall in the scuffle.

He’s no stranger to violence, having been convicted of assaulting a woman a year ago. Now, he’s in trouble with the authorities again.

Psychologists and probation officers fear he may relapse. According to the reports, he harbors a lot of anger due to past abuse from his father when he was young. However, he refuses to accept that he has a problem. He experienced a lot of stress during his childhood, which led to him leaving Aruba at the age of 19.

In summary, he doesn’t have a mental problem but suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, which means he acts before thinking, yet he’s responsible for his actions. Both psychologists and probation officers believe he needs professional guidance.

Despite all explanations from the psychologists and probation officers, the prosecutor deems the seriousness of the offense cannot be mitigated. He attacked his father with a jagged rock, leaving lasting marks and injuries. Moreover, all blows were aimed at the head, potentially fatal.

Imagine the profound hatred the accused holds against his father, traveling from Rancho to Mabon just to confront him. The message he read said, “Myron is not to be trusted.”
There was no sign of remorse or regret for his actions either, leading the prosecutor to demand four years, one of which is conditional, and three years of probation. Additionally, they requested that he be supervised by probation officers and prohibited from contacting his father during the probation period.

In the end, the judge closed the case, declaring the accused guilty of the first offense, attempting to kill his father.

The judge shared the prosecutor’s sentiments, agreeing with all the demands.

The accused has two weeks from the sentencing date to appeal.
